11 Beach Hotels to Cap Off the Perfect Summer Road Trip

Reading Time: 8 minutes

There’s no precise science that determines what makes one beach better than another one. In fact, here at Luxpitality, we’re of the firm belief that there are no bad beaches. We think what makes a beach good is the traveler who visits (and we know you’ll always bring your A-game). No two beaches are alike either. Some beaches are built for big-time party destinations while others cater to adventure-seekers, wellness enthusiasts, or wanderlusters.

In the past, there hasn’t been much of a conversation around beaches that cater to one group in particular: the road trippers. Typically, people jump a jet and fly around the world in search of a great beach, and they often strike gold. But this summer we’ve seen a massive resurgence with the road trips as people opt to take the car instead of a plane.

One thing that makes a road trip so fun is the journey itself. However, the best road trips are able to infuse an exciting journey with an even more exciting destination. And what’s better than a beach-destination that’s off the beaten path? We’re talking about the places you never read about tucked into wild coastlines, rocky shores, small-town villages, and hidden coves. These are the beaches designed for road trippers.

As America gears up to hit the road this, it’s time for these beaches to take center stage and shine like the stars they are. Use this list of boutique beach hotels, which are true hidden gems, to perfect your summer road trip this year. You’re going to love them.

1. Timber Cove

Northern California’s Sonoma coastline is a bit rugged with big boulders and rocks, but you shouldn’t let that deter you from a trip to the beach. This is especially true if you’re going to stay at Timber Cove Resort, which sits high atop a dramatic and breathtaking bluff that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

The beach here is best enjoyed strolling the edge of the bluff, or watching the sunset with a bottle of fine Sonoma wine and charcuterie board from Coast Kitchen (the amazing restaurant on-site). If you’re looking for a more lay-out and swim friendly type of beach, Black Point and Goat Rock are a quick drive south.

2. The Ranch at Laguna Beach

The Ranch at Laguna Beach is a rustic, boutique property that’s made up of ranch-style cottages that pop against a backdrop of sun-soaked canyons. However, one of the biggest draws for The Ranch is that it’s only 350 yards from Laguna Beach, accessible by a shuttle or a scenic beach path—we recommend taking the path, it’s amazing.

You’ll immediately know why it’s one of SoCal’s best beaches the second your feet touch the soft, white sands. Grab a surfboard, go kayaking, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding, snorkel, skimboard, explore the tide pools, or lay out all day with some drinks (margaritas recommended). After the sun has set, walk back to The Ranch for a satisfying dinner at their restaurant Harvest and a relaxing night at one of the fire pits strewn about the property.

3. Hotel Joaquin

Hotel Joaquin is another hot Laguna Beach property, one which carries a California surf-swagger throughout its entire property. Each room, which feels more like a bungalow than a hotel room, are individually designed to give you a unique visit, from the flea-market furniture from France to the reclaimed terracotta and beyond.

It’s situated right above Shaw’s Cove, one of the many beaches on the seven-mile stretch that makes up the entirety of Laguna Beach. The cove feels a bit more private than other sections, and it’s perfect for days of relaxation, surf, and sand. Although, we think you might have a hard time tearing yourself away from the pool at Hotel Joaquin.

4. Cambria Beach Lodge

Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles you’ll hit San Luis Obispo, one of the most primetime road trip destinations in California (and easily accessible from plenty out of state locations as well). Cambria Beach Lodge is the perfect place to enjoy this little slice of paradise from as it emanates a chilled-out California vibe that people find so calming. You can take in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from the sun-bleached, seaside inspired accommodations, or take a four-minute walk to Moonstone Beach.

It’s a perfect blend of sand and rock, and locals love the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, where you can witness the splendor firsthand. It’s worth renting a few bikes as you explore the mile-long boardwalk, and if you’re into surfing Moonstone Beach itself is a great place to shred.

5. Cavallo Point Lodge

Cavallo Point Lodge is located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, but on the more relaxed and chilled-out side (aka, not Downtown San Francisco). It’s the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of the bay, surrounded by the natural settings of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The vibe here is relaxed af, and you’re going to love it.

All beaches are different, and Cavallo Point Lodge offers a unique twist to what many of us might think a beach should be. There’s a gently sloping hill, covered in lush grass and bright flowers (depending on what time of year you’re there) that leads to the water. You can take in the bay views on an elevated footpath, rent kayaks, or hangout for a picnic at the water’s edge. No matter where you go, you’ll get unrestricted views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge itself.

6. Hart’s Camp

A lot of people might not think that Oregon has great beaches, but we would challenge that assumption. Just because it’s in the Pacific Northwest, a region known for more rainy weather and cloud coverage doesn’t mean there aren’t jaw-dropping beaches where you and your crew can kick it. And we think Hart’s Camp is the perfect getaway to experience these off-the-beaten-path beaches.

The property has seven distinctive airstream trailers to suit your unique sense of style: classic, modern, and sleek. No matter which one you choose, you’re literally steps from the Pacific City beach and Cape Kiwanda. It’s prime for surfing, kayaking, ocean exploring, and roaring beach fires. If you love photography, there’s no shortage of kickass photo ops here, so bring your good camera (the DSLR, not the iPhone).

7. Bay Point Landing

Another killer option in Oregon is Bay Point Landing, which is geared as a modern camping destination embedded in the wild coast of Oregon. Much like Hart’s Camp, Bay Point Landing features sleek airstream trailers and RV sites, however they also have modern cabins available that are situated right where the beach becomes grass.

You’re right near Horsfall Beach and Bastendorff Beach if you’re keen to explore the wild coastline by the water’s edge clamming, surfing, and stand-up paddle boarding, or you can dig in to Sunset Bay, Shore Acres, or Cape Arago state parks, which offer scenic hiking views overlooking the Pacific. Don’t forget to explore the dunes as well, where we would recommend renting a few ATVs and ripping through the sand.

8. Lodges on Vashon

Did you know there are islands off the coast of Washington State, and that they harbor some amazing boutique and lifestyle hotels? Well, now you do, and The Lodges on Vashon (one of those islands) was built to fuse nature, greenery, saltwater, and sea air together.

Your beach experience here won’t be geared around partying, but rather will feed your soul, clear your mind, and bring you back to what’s important in life. There’s something inspiring about walking the coastal beaches of an island, remote and unplugged from the world, after strolling through small-town shops and meeting locals with a slower pace of life. Your feet might be tired after a day of exploration, but you’ll be more energized than ever.

9. A Room at the Beach

We’re taking it back east, to Bridgehampton, New York, with A Room at the Beach. This property is inspired by a love for sandy soil, open spaces, the ocean, sailing, fishing, BBQs, great seafood, and all those East Coast summer beach home vibes which set it apart from the laid-back surfer atmosphere of the West Coast.

The beaches are only a short bike ride away, which gives credence to the name of the property—it really does feel as if you’re staying in a room right on the beach. Plus, the rooms are built to be embedded in nature with furnished terraces overlooking lush gardens and outdoor showers.

10. Salt House Inn

Provincetown, or P-Town, Massachusetts is located at the very extreme tip of Cape Cod—that little curl on the edge of the state. It’s a prime destination for East Coasters looking for a summer getaway, especially those who love a good road trip, and The Salt House Inn is ready to welcome them all. It’s a clean-cut property that screams New England, with a light touch of quirky bed and breakfast aesthetic.

One major benefit to being in P-Town is the beach access, which is unreal, since you’re located on a pseudo island. It’s the age old question you’ll have to deal with when you get there: which beach should you go to? There’s something for everyone, from party-centric options all the way to quiet seaside options. You can’t go wrong, so just let the wind carry you somewhere and see where you land.

11. Life House Collins Park

Miami Beach is known for raging parties, but there are quiet bastions hidden away in the area. In one of these corners of Miami, you’ll find Life House, Collins Park, which is a veritable oasis for those looking to slow things down a bit in an art-deco design dream.

You’re close to the action if you want it, but you can also relax in a hidden pool, on the rooftop deck, or dining on the canals. Of course, you’ll get direct access to South Beach, which is maybe one of the most picturesque beaches in America. The sand is so soft you could sleep on it, and the water is a deep aquamarine that’s always the perfect temperature. Don’t miss this one.
