11 Labor Day Hotels Loved by Locals

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Labor Day often marks the end of summer. It’s a time when the air cools down a bit, people think about getting their winter gear out of storage, and the leaves subtly begin to change color.

It’s also got a longstanding reputation for one of the best times to take a quick trip. People take extended long weekends so they can jump a quick jet, take a quick road trip, or bask in a relaxing staycation.

We rounded up some hotels that are loved by locals, from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast, hitting a few areas in between. No matter where you want to go, or how you plan to get there, these boutique hotels are the perfect place to stay. Check it out.

1. Salt House Inn

Head to P-Town, Massachusetts—all the way to the extreme tip of Cape Cod—and you’ll find the Salt House Inn. Throughout the stylish, whitewashed New England B&B you’ll find a haven of clean-cut designs, cozy rooms, and killer beach access.

Plus, you’re only a stone’s throw from Commercial Street, the main drag in P-Town. Spend your days exploring the township, soaking up the sun, or enjoying primetime seafood. When you’re ready, plump feather-topped beds and wisteria-scented gardens await your return.

2. A Room at the Beach

Located in Bridgehampton, New York, A Room at the Beach is inspired by a love for sandy soil, open spaces, the ocean, sailing, fishing, BBQs, great seafood, and all those East Coast summer beach home vibes which set it apart from the laid-back surfer atmosphere of the West Coast.

As the name would imply, the beaches are only a short bike ride away—it really does feel as if you’re staying in a room right on the beach. That’s due to the fact that all the rooms are embedded in nature, with furnished terraces overlooking lush gardens and outdoor showers.

3. Eastwind

Eastwind is located in Windham, New York, embedded into the landscape of the Catskill Mountains. This boutique hotel was built purely to drink in the breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery (which pairs well with a signature cocktail from their bar). You can also head out to explore the Kaaterskill Falls hiking trail, views from the slopes of Windham Mountain, or a day trip to the Saugerties Lighthouse.

We love how the rooms are set up, which some would say make it feel as if you’re “almost camping.” That is, they provide a high-end glamping experience with direct access to nature, finished with all the touches of a luxurious hotel room.

4. Cedar Lakes Estate

Cedar Lakes Estate sits on 500 acres in Hudson Valley, nestled in sweet-smelling pine forest, with cozy log cabins, and a host of outdoorsy hijinks. It’s a collection of “fairytale cottages”, built from home-grown oak and furnished with animal hide rugs, reclaimed woods, and antler chandeliers.

In some of the cottages, you’ll also find stone fireplaces, kitted-out kitchens, BBQ-ready patios, or a rowboat moored just offshore. It’s a great, hidden retreat where you can hunker down inside or stargaze outside next to a roaring bonfire.

5. Dunton Hot Springs

Dunton Hot Springs was built in the San Juan Mountains back in the 1800s. The rich history behind this property is what makes it one of our personal favorites: it served as a mining outpost where the miners, beaten down by long days prospecting the hills, creatively diverted the naturally occurring hot springs for a nice, long soak.

It was later abandoned by the miners and became a ghost town, but was fully restored by Dunton Destinations and turned into a modern masterpiece of balance between old and new. It kept the ghost town vibe, but has been outfitted with WiFi, luxurious beds, and stylish decor.

Of course, the hot springs themselves have remained fully intact and ready for weary travelers looking to relax after days spent exploring the vast surrounding wilderness. They also have an on-site spa, a rustic saloon, and countless adventures you can partake in.

6. Ranch at Rock Creek

Located in one of the many pristine, natural valleys throughout Montana, The Ranch at Rock Creek is a boutique hotel that doubles as a 19th century homestead and working ranch. It’s a characteristic we see in plenty of Montana properties, like Paws Up, and it’s perfect for those who want to get off the grid.

There are no nearby towns, but the on-site amenities are all that you’ll ever need. Enjoy the spa, go ice skating, watch movies in their giant theater, hit the bowling alley, go horseback riding, or spend a lazy day fishing. It’s all included with the rate for your room, so get out there, put your phone away, and have some fun.

7. Calistoga Ranch by Auberge Resorts

Calistoga Ranch feels as if it’s part of the lush, scenic wilderness of Napa Valley. Designed to be your perfect canyon retreat, each of the 50 freestanding lodges are literally embedded directly into nature. Massive tree trunks spring up through deck floorboards, and mighty boughs frame the doorways.

You can stay in a room that’s 600 square feet, or 2,400 square feet. No matter what you choose, you’ll get a private patio with an outdoor shower that further blends the lines between indoor luxury and outdoor nature. Unplug from the world and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.

8. Solage by Auberge Resorts

Where Calistoga Ranch reflects the natural beauty of Napa Valley, Solage mirrors the hometown spirit of Napa. That’s not to say it isn’t just as beautiful though. The boutique hotel simply caters more to the wine lovers, foodies, and wellness seekers.

You’ll find small-town charms, decadent lounges, spacious suites, one hell of a beautiful poo, and cozy fire pits strewn about the property. It’s the perfect destination for locals who love spending time at the vineyards, road trippers, and even Napa Valley wine makers themselves. Be welcomed by clean lines, natural materials, and a great glass of wine.

9. Timber Cove

Northern California’s Sonoma coastline is rugged and lined with massive boulders, rocks, and sheer cliff faces. But don’t let that deter you from staying at Timber Cove, which offers one of the most gorgeous coastal views in the area.

The property sits high atop a dramatic and breathtaking bluff overlooking the mighty Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect location to stroll out and watch the sunset with a bottle of find Sonoma wine and charcuterie board. If you’d rather head to the beach Black Point and Goat Rock beaches are just a quick drive away.

10. Hotel Joaquin

We love Northern California, but we can’t forget about all our friends down South. Hotel Joaquin is one of the hottest options, located in Laguna Beach, and it carries a true Californian surf-swagger throughout the entire property.

The rooms feel like bungalows situated right above Shaw’s Cove, one of the many beaches on the seven-mile stretch that makes up the entirety of Laguna Beach. The cove feels a bit more private than other sections, and it’s perfect for days of relaxation, surf, and sand. Although, we think you might have a hard time tearing yourself away from the pool at Hotel Joaquin.

San Luis Obispo, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, is one of the most prime destinations on California’s coast. Cambria Beach Lodge is the perfect place from which to enjoy this little slice of paradise.

The property emanates a chilled-out vibe that will calm your soul as you take in the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. You’ll also take delight in the sun-bleached, seaside accommodations that perfectly blend beach to bed. Any local will tell you not to miss the nearby Moonstone Beach Boardwalk as well.
